Thursday, March 24, 2011: I believe historians will note this as the day the English language died. On that day, the Oxford English Dictionary — the bastion of all that is grammatically great, the stalwart defender of laudable lexicon — officially admitted "LOL," "FYI," the heart symbol and more into its ranks.

And the world of Twitter was buzzing. Let's see what people had to say. We promise we'll use words.

Edward Muhl, Universal Pictures' production chief, was talking about 9-year-old actress Elizabeth Taylor, who passed away this morning, after proving Muhl considerably wrong by performing in more than 70 movies and television shows between 1942 and 2003.
She also won two Academy Awards, and the American Film Institute named Taylor seventh on its Female Legends list.
Her other job, apparently, was to get married as often as possible. She was married eight times to seven husbands.
One wonders if, instead of saying "I do," she started saying "For now."

If you were into music during the 1980's and 1990's you no doubt heard a little van halen. maybe you heard a lot of Van Halen.
For fans, it didn't matter too much if it was David Lee Roth or Sammy hagar singing, it was all about Eddie Van Halen's guitar licks.

When Roth left the band people swore it was because his ego overshadowed everyone. Roth blamed it on Eddie, but not many people bought it.

Sammy Hagar has now released a book, talking about his days as lead singer of Van Halen.

Roth may have been right after all....

Once again proving tone deaf people have absolutely no clue how horrible they sound, meet Rebecca Black.
Other than being rich enough to afford a production company to write her song, add backing vocals and make a video, Black is completely talentless. And apparently clueless.

Her video has received 10 million hits on YouTube, mostly because it is the most awful thing ever. Don't believe me? Listen for yourself and make your own decision. But don't say I didn't warn you.

Anyway, she is a Trending Topic on Twitter, but that is mostly because people can't get enough of making fun of her lack of talent....

Nate Dogg Dead at 41

Rapper Nate Dogg has died. He was just 41 years old.

He was born in Long Beach, California, sang in the choir at New Hope Baptist Church and was a United States Marine. He recently formed a gospel choir called Innate Praise.

As a member of the rap group 213 he shot to stardom after garnering the attention of Dr. Dre. He signed a contract with Death Row Records in 1993.

His family has released no details regarding the cause of his death, only that Nate Dogg has died.

Just as Egypt has been cast as the Twitter revolution, so Friday's massive Japanese earthquake and tsunami was destined to become the Twitter disaster.

In 140-character bites, the story unfolded: the shock and terror; the sense of human frailty mixed with lifesaving information; the messages of those seeking comfort and those seeing some kind of divine retribution, all mixing at hyper-speed.

Hearings on the alleged radicalization of Muslim Americans are neither "radical or un-American," congressman Peter King said in opening the controversial House Homeland Security Committee session Thursday.
King, a Republican from New York, said recruiting young American Muslims is part of al Qaeda's strategy to continue attacking the United States and called on Americans to reject The Council on American-Islamic Relations, a prominent Muslim American advocacy group in the United States.
The first of a series of hearings opened Thursday morning despite strong criticism from American Muslims, who have called them an unfair attack on loyal citizens and a dangerous break from the traditional U.S. embrace of tolerance and pluralism.....

Minnesota Democrat Keith Ellison, the sole Muslim member of Congress, delivered sharply critical testimony. Blaming the entire Muslim community for the evil and violence of individuals, Ellison said, is "the very heart of stereotyping and scapegoating."

Earlier on CNN's "American Morning," Ellison said the "hearing actually could set us back because it reinforces the al Qaeda narrative, which is that America is at war with Islam."

Ellison faulted King for arranging anecdotal testimony rather than inviting more law-enforcement authorities or experts in terrorism, including FBI or CIA agents. He said people who don't know that would be inclined to see the hearing as a good idea.

"They think that we're having a legitimate hearing based on real investigation," Ellison said. "What we're actually doing is having a theatrical performance not really designed to get to the heart of the matter."

It has been more than a decade since the death of director Stanley Kubrick. He was fresh from completing work on the film, Eyes Wide Shut, starring Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise.
Kubrick is perhaps best remembered for his work on 2001: A Space Odyssey. He also helmed A Clockwork Orange, Spartacus, Lolita, The Shining and Full Metal jacket.

Kubrick has a certain style, a certain flair for film making which some say was a holdover from the Golden Ag of Hollywood. I say, the guy made great films. He will be missed....and he is Trending on the Twitter:

Mike Huckabee seems to be taking page out of the Charlie Sheen playbook. All this week he has repeatedly made statements that his office has later apologized for, claimed were taken out of context or just sound a little loopy (to me.)
Like saying Natalie Portman was setting a bad example because she is an unwed mother. Um, last time I checked she had enough money in the bank to buy his next office for him--not that she would, mind you. Jane Russel, 89, the star of Gentleman Prefer Blondes with Marilyn Monroe, has died. She was 89.

Russell was the quintessential sex symbol. The most popular sex symbol of the 1940's-1950's. During World War II just about every soldier had a picture of Russell in his foot locker or in his pocket. And for good reason. She was tall, a leggy brunette with smoldering dark eyes and a sultry voice that could melt butter.

She will be missed....unfortunately, many of the posts honoring her on Twitter have been linked to spam websites. Disgraceful....these, however, are real. Like Russell herself.

Kirk Douglas a treat on Oscar night

Veteran actor (and the REAL Spartacus) Kirk Douglas presented the Best Supporting Actress last night at the Academy Awards show. As it happened, he outshone co-host James Franco who, despite the commercials showing him pumped-up and ready to go, seemed to be half-asleep the entire time.
Douglas is a class act all the way. At 94 years old he still has the magic, though it comes out a little slower and little less clearly (following a stoke he suffered several years ago.)
No doubt Douglas would have danced across the stage if he'd been able...and clearly folks would have loved to see him do it:

Lincoln Tunnel closed: Twitter spreads the word fast

No sooner a crash involving three buses and a motorcycle forced the closure of the Lincoln Tunnel in NYC than folks were Tweeting the news of it. Faster than the Port Authority could notify drivers to avoid the area, Twitter was letting people know to find an alternate route.

NEW YORK — Three buses and a motorcycle crashed in New York City's Lincoln Tunnel during the height of the Thursday morning rush hour, leading to long delays, according to the Port Authority.

The injured motorcyclist was transferred to Bellevue Hospital.

Passengers on the buses are in the process of being off-loaded and evaluated for injuries.

Due to the accident, the center tube of the tunnel has been closed, Port Authority reported. Delays are estimated at 90 minutes for people trying to enter the city.

Bart Simpson, that rascally character from the hit Fox series, The Simpsons, was brought to life by creator Matt Groening 32 years ago today.
Wow! He still doesn't look a day over 9 1/2. It's amazing what a well placed eraser can do for cartoon characters.
Bart has always been voiced by the wonderful actress Nancy Cartwright who has done an excellent job of keeping his ne'er-do-well attitude and flippant tone sounding fresh and new, year after year.

Overnight, Christchurch, New Zealand, suffered an aftershock of the 7.1 earthquake it experienced in September. The aftershock was 6.3 but unlike the main quake, which killed no one, reports say at least 65 people were killed in the recent quake.

A wave of protests and popular revolution are sweeping across the Middle East, all thanks to Facebook, Twitter and a handful of other social media networks.
Last month some sneaky organizers posted an event on Facebook to unite people in protest in Cairo on January 25. More than 80,000 people hit the "Like" button and twice that many said they would "Maybe" attend. No telling how many non-tech savvy people got word of the same event from someone they knew who had a Facebook profile.
The result: After 30 years of autocratic rule Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak resigned and a new democracy has been born.
Today, similar efforts have led to protests in Bahrain, Iran, Yemen, Algeria and Libya. Not everyone will win the day, but their voices are being heard.
Unfortunately, thanks to social media, we can also hear their cries of anguish as despotic regimes seek to hold on to power no matter what....

Seinfeld's 'Uncle Leo' dead at 88

Actor Les Lesser, perhaps best known for his role as Uncle Leo on Seinfeld, has died of cancer related pneumonia at a care facility in Burbank, Calif

"Jerry! Hello!" was his slogan and he used it to steal every scene he was in.

If you didn't know Lesser from Seinfeld you likely still recognize his face. He started acting in 1954 and appeared in the movies Birdman of Alcatraz, Kelly's Heroes, Papillon and Clint Eastwood's The Outlaw Josey Wales."

You also might have caught him performing on televisions Get Smart, The Munsters, The Rockford Files, ER and Everybody Loves Raymond.

Lesser was a great character actor because he was a great character and a great actor. he will be missed by millions of fans.

Lara Logan: A true journalist

The media constantly gets a bad rap from just about everyone who has anything to say about anything. On-air journalists probably get the worst of it.
Unfortunately, a lot of what is said about the media is true. Especially what they say about on-air talent. With a few notable exceptions. Folks like Anderson Cooper, Christiane Amanpour and Lara Logan, are among the few journalists you can tune in for unbiased, complete coverage of the world around you. They often put themselves in the line of fire to bring you the news that matters.
Last week Logan, was viciously attacked while reporting from Egypt.
Logan made a name for herself by reporting from Iraq and Afghanistan repeatedly and at great risk to herself. She showed viewers what was really happening there long after many other media outlets had seemingly forgotten there was an ongoing conflict there.
Sure, she's pretty. Yes, her personal life wasn't always pristine. So what? She is a damn good journalist and one of the few remaining on-air "talents" left for American viewers to tune in to watch...I wish her well and hope she will recover soon.

Irina Shayk has risen to the top of the modeling profession.

The 25-year old Russian is this year's Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition cover girl, an honor she first discovered herself yesterday at a taping of The Late Show with David Letterman .

"There were 10 models there to do the Top 10 List, and nobody knows until the last minute who the cover will be," Shayk said. "And then I saw it, and I couldn't believe it."

This might explain why Irina Shayk is suddenly a Trending Topic on Twitter. Or maybe this is why....

CBS reporter Serene Branson, a two-time Emmy nominee herself, covering the Grammy's appears to have had a stroke on-air while reporting, live. The video of her slurring her words for a few seconds has been making the rounds, with some commenting she might have been drunk. However, watch the video and clearly it seems something is just not working right in her mind.
The station has said she is being checked out by a hospital...

That's right, no sooner did your dad finally master the licks for "Paradise City" than the makers of Guitar Hero, Activision Blizzard Inc., announced they would be discontinuing the game after a healthy six year run.
The company also makes the uber-popular Call of Duty series, so it's not like they are hurting for money. And given that most "bands" today play synthetic instruments, it was likely getting harder and harder to find popular songs with a guitar track attached.
So, farewell Guitar Hero, the world, especially Twitter users it seems, will miss you....

Patriot Act extensions fail to pass

CNN is reporting that House Republicans failed to muster enough votes to approve further extensions of the Patriot Act:

Republicans seemed to be blindsided Tuesday night when they came up seven votes short of passing a bill keeping three current measures used by law enforcement and intelligence officials from expiring at the end of February.

The bill, considered under a House rule requiring two-thirds majority for passage, would have extended these provisions through December 8, 2011. Twenty-six Republicans opposed the bill, eight of whom are freshmen. Some Republicans such as Ron Paul of Texas have previously opposed Patriot Act extensions because of concerns about civil liberties.

Twitter is abuzz with folks happy to see it fail even as they mocked Republicans for letting it fail....

Jules Verne would be celebrating his 183rd birthday today, had he not died in 1905.

Widely consider the father of modern science fiction, Verne authored such classic stories as Around the World in Eighty Days; Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea; From Earth to the Moon; and Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Some of you might recall he was also the favorite author of Doc Emmett Brown from the Back to the Future trilogy.

Most importantly Verne made it ok for millions of people around the world to dream of a better future through science. He wrote stories that showed the dark side of technology, sure, but he also showed it went side-by-side with hope.

Google has a special doodle today which lets you control Verne's submarine and dive beneath the sea...very cool touch.

It pleases me to no end to see that today, more than 100 years after his death, people remember and people celebrate. Especially on Twitter. Verne himself likely would have loved that....

Maybe singers should focus more on the meaning of our National Anthem rather than trying to belt out the lyrics louder than anyone before them
Our National Anthem is very difficult to sing. I always believed there was a good reason for that. Our Democracy, like singing the National Anthem, is a difficult thing to master. It simply cannot be done easily. It is also not something which we should brag about because it doesn't always work. In fact, we have a good deal of problems in our nation right now.
However, whatever the problems with Democracy as we know it, singing our National Anthem shouldn't be one of them. The words are easy, the tempo is easily mastered, and if you can't hit the high notes, who cares. Understand the meaning and learn the words. Easy enough.

So, apparently Google Calendar went down today. No doubt the company is aware, perhaps ding some work on it even, and will have it restored shortly. In the meantime one look at Twitter (#GoogleCalendar is a Trending Topic right now) and we can easily see the way some people have wrapped their entire lives, especially their business lives, around a piece of technology, only to have it fail.
This isn't the first time technology has let someone down. It likely will not be the last time. Technology, like human beings themselves, is not perfect. It does fail.
And over reliance on anything, human or machine, is bound to get you in trouble sooner or later....

Why we rely on a Groundhog to predict our weather is beyond me. Especially when you consider whether he sees his shadow or not, Spring still starts the same time each year.
Despite my misgivings people have been watching Punxsutawney Phil for decades and are no less excited about his predictions today (in the age of instantaneous satellite weather imagery) than they were in the 1950's when all you did to get the weather report was read the Farmer's Almanac.

Despite the fact all Internet Service Providers have been shut down in Egypt, the people can still access Twitter. Thanks to a sneaky (brilliant) move by Google, folks can post a Tweet by calling a special phone number and leaving a voice message. It's called Speak2Tweet.
Twitter has been a means of getting information out of Egypt even as the government there has attempted to shut down all communication. CNN crews have been accosted and had equipment taken, ISP's are gone, wireless networks are spotty--but at least we have the Twitter to know what is going on.

Senior US District Judge Roger Vinson declared the entire Obama administration's health-care overhaul unconstitutional on Monday.
Vinson wasn't happy to simply pick and choose the specific parts he had trouble with. He felt obligated to legislate from the bench, and strike down the new law as wholly unconstitutional.

Needless to say, some folks are happy, some folks are unhappy. I would guess their joy (or lack thereof) is directly proportional to their income level and whether or not they currently have health insurance....go figure.

Looks like someone is picking up the ThunderCats cartoon.

There is not much to say about this. ThunderCats was a popular cartoon in the mid 1980's which featured a group of cat-people, the last of their race (of course) who are trying to rebuild their feline society on a strange planet.

Obviously, people remember the show fondly, as judging by the huge fan reaction to a leaked promo-photo and news that the show would be rebooted into a new form.

This fan craze has boosted ThunderCats to the top of many search engines and of course, made it a Trending Topic on Twitter:

Twitter is the place to go to find out news on the latest dead celebrity. Case in point, Jack LaLanne, who died this week at the age of 96.
Some of us recall LaLanne from his television appearances where he promoted a healthy lifestyle and the importance of physical and mental fitness. LaLanne was an inspiration to thousands (if not millions) of people over the years. So goes Google, so goes the Internet. At least that's the way it's been for the past several years. So, when Larry Page replaced Eric Schmidt as Google's CEO you can bet every tech geek around the world took notice.
The move seems to have more to do with the company's pursuit of cloud-based applications than it does with any specific problem centered on Schmidt. How Page will handle the company's ever-expanding pantheon of products, and what direction he will push them to move, well, only time will tell....
In the meantime, Eric Schmidt should at least be happy to know he is a Trending Topic on Twitter....

50 years later the words of JFK resonate

It was 50 years ago today that President John F. Kennedy gave his now famous inaugural address.

The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe -- the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God.

We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution. Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans -- born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage, and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world.

Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of liberty.

Today marks the 202nd birthday of Edgar Allan Poe and oddly enough (or perhaps not oddly enough for him) Twitter users have made #EdgarAllenPoe a Trending Topic.

Poe, widely considered the originator of the modern short story, is still known as a Master of the Macabre. His short stories are still read in most American classrooms and by students of literature the world over.
How fitting then that the Master of the Short Story would be honored in 140-characters or less.....

'Trenta' Trends on Twitter

Starbucks was once THE social media business...a coffee shop for the 21st Century, long before the 21st Century started and long after coffee shops had faded from public view.

For nearly two decades, from the 1990's through the early 21st Century, Starbucks was opening a new store somewhere in the world every weekday. That type of growth is certainly tremendous, but also impossible to sustain. There are only so many places to put a trendy coffee shop, though I hear a lunar-based operation could be coming. (Ok, I'm just kidding about that one.)
Anyway, proving they have certainly not faded from relevant pop-culture, Starbucks shot to the top of the Trending Topics list at Twitter this week when they announced a new, even larger sized cup called a "Trenta". It is 30 ounces of frothy goodness.

Initially only iced-coffee and iced-tea will be available in Trenta sizes, but it seems if customers demand it (and they likely will) everything else they serve will soon follow....
